The Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy

Today marks the first of a recurring cartoon/illustration I'll be doing each weekend for The Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy blog. I hadn't previously realized the satisfaction that comes from putting tiger stripes on things. Thank you, James Cameron, you changed my life.

And the winner is…

Not Avatar, I hope. It was a good movie, solidly entertaining an' all, but I really don't think it's an Oscar winner.

Nice pic!

Thanks, Tim. Yeah, I have to agree about Avatar. Eye candy's eye candy, even solidly entertaining eye candy.

How do you add color to your work? Is the second image completely inked or is it partially finished?

Grant,

All the color is done in Photoshop (the blue on the original is the non-photo blue pencil I draw with). The original art is completely inked.

There was a separate overlay on which I inked the tiger stripes. Then I scanned that in and use it as a color mask in Photoshop.
