First, take a listen to RiYL, hosted by Brian Heater. Recording in New York at MoCCA, Brian and I had a great discussion about film, comics and the communication between the two.

Then listen to Tell Me Something I Don't Know, hosted by Jim Rugg and Jasen Lex. We get pretty deep into discussing social media and how it impacts the way I make and consume art. Heavy duty, kids.

I really can't thank everyone enough for their support during day 1 of Giant Sloth's kickstarter campaign. We're at 40% of our goal heading into day 2. Wow. Just... wow!

And I was beyond flattered to learn the film was featured on Kickstarter's "Projects We Love" newsletter. (Right under Reading Rainbow, a show whose theme song I still hum on a weekly basis... I backed that campaign without a second thought).

Let's keep going! As we move forward, new rewards and goals will be announced, so keep spreading the word and keep voting for independent, weird animation!

If you missed it on Wednesday: this week on Forlorn TV, I'm taking a break from the usual animation to show how I rough out a character in Photoshop. I don't typically make process videos, nor do I typically draw superheroes... so naturally, here's a process video of me drawing a superhero.

After moving to the east coast and shoveling out of a brutal winter, I've finally launched the prints section of the Forlorn Funnies store. You can now order a print of any of the portraits from Artists Authors Thinkers Directors (a list of all the portraits is here). Or you can purchase art that's popped up on walls in Comedy Bang! Bang! Or you can get a lumberjack punching a hydra. Because you can never have enough lumberjacks punching hydras.

There are playgrounds that still live in my head, and always will, because of their design.

It's a difficult balance to strike,... making the playground unique and fostering creativity and play, rather than simply acting out some predetermined story (this is a pirate ship! act like you're on a ship!).

I'm a big believer in letting kids write the story when it comes to playing (rather than spelling it all out, as a lot of toys do these days). And <a href="http://io9.com/these-are-the-most-fantastical-playgrounds-ever-built-1526739846" target=?_blank">these ingeniously designed playgrounds do an amazing job of reframing reality, destroying scale and the everyday, so that they only suggest the beginning of something much larger (or smaller). Kids can create the rest.

I'm sure they're making powerful memories along the way.

If you're in the Boston/Cambridge area tonight, stop by and see me in conversation with Denis Kitchen about Will Eisner. I absolutely promise to bring up the train wreck that was The Spirit movie. There's no way I can help myself. But I also promise to geek out completely about typography and layout, so hopefully it will all balance out.Paul Hornschemeierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01161065572339555774noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7163532025872493429.post-16274086285165186542014-03-05T10:34:00.000-06:002014-03-05T10:34:57.048-06:00Mourning Paper

Ironically, while I was drawing this illustration for The New York Times, concerning the failing health of alternative weekly newspapers, I was listening to a podcast about the failing health of newspapers. Or is that tragedy?
